Queen Gowharshad ordered that a beautiful mosque be built,
As the mosque was being constructed,
The Queen, with her retinue, entered the mosque,
To oversee the workers;
The wind blew her veil away from her face:
A bricklayer fell captive to her beauty.
The theologian, Fakhr al-Din Razi, entered the city Basrah;
And a large crowd of men and women gathered to see him;
An old woman was passing by,
‘What is all this noise and bustle for’, she asked.
A wise man from India travelled to Mecca;
He had travelled for months;
He was fatigued; and his feet were sore…
The Moroccan Sufi master, ad-Darqawi tells us:
‘One night, I was in the prayer-niche,
absorbed in Invocation;
When a sun shone in my heart;
and I heard a voice from the Unseen.
